I remember being bullied in school for never wearing makeup so one day I went in with a full face on including the most orange (and slightly too dark) shade of dream Matte Mouse and I don’t think I touched foundation again for YEARS after that until I finally realised I needed a much lighter shade. It was very very common in my high school though.
All I can do is laugh thinking about the lines everyone had at the jaw line etc. No one blended the orange mouse into their necks at our school.and everyone was tanning an insane amount!
I will be 60 in a few weeks! (Go me!). I grew up with this and Max Factor. I remember in the early 80s everyone doing their eyes like Cher. I modeled in the early 80s and the way the makeup was applied, was like painting a wall!!! 🤦♀️🤷♀️ Love how skin care has changed from just soap and water or Ponds Cold Cream, to better products. I also have oily/combo skin, but very few wrinkles or lines. Been using soap and water for ever... lol
I had a client whose mom was 94 & her skin seriously looked like she was in her 60s! 1 day, I asked what her secret was & she said “water & Ponds.” Lol! Genetics clearly played a part. But, she put on makeup & did her hair every day to paint. She rarely left her daughter’s home, & she still looked fabulous everyday!🥰
I’m a very prejudice fan of Roberts but I’ll always tell the truth. This is such a great forum I just love reading Roberts stories and thoughts ♥️♥️♥️♥️☮️☮️☮️☮️ he always brings a light to my day. PS. I will go get some Dream Matte Mousse 😀
I actually have very fond memories of the matte mousse. My roommate introduced me to her, and soon all my roommates at the time were using it 😂. I think i stopped because my color match was off (i got darker or lighter or something) and so i passed it along to my mom and my aunt, who were also rather fond of it 😁. Ah, memories 🥰
The disconnect from supplier and consumer was so real back then! I remember reading beauty magazines religiously, but I still felt like something was wrong with me. Even the YouTube era of full glam had me feeling like I was still just a failure. You helped me more than anyone to understand my combination skin, hooded eyes and oily eyelids. And when you suggested Pony and Smitha I grew so much!
I can’t remember when it was, but I believe you had featured it in a video at one point, so when I saw it at CVS I figured I’d give it a second chance. Honestly not as bad as we remembered it! I definitely remember how it would have that horrible crust ring if applied over dried out acne. I can’t even remember how I applied it back in the days, but I tried it with a flat kabuki and it came out rather nice. The only problem was I picked a shade a tad too light, but that was my fault, not the product’s. 😅
Yessss i definitely spoke about this foundation before! And with the very small shade range, it would be very difficult to get the weight shade without trying a few times!
I had a look and it was a video from 3 years ago, when you were trying products we hated🤣 I hadn’t realized it’d been that long since you made that video.
I remember using dream matte mousse as a teen, and all the bits you said about it clinging and being the wrong shade. But for years I just thought foundation and my skin didn't agree because I knew so little about skin prep and had oily, acne prone skin. Knowing what I know now, I would give it another go and probably have a vastly different experience!
Where’s the millennials? Do you feel seen? I do! I’d apply this after using every body shop tea tree product in existence with my fingers in the wrong shade to my chin. I’d then put a tonne of Australis powder on top with that little round sponge that came with it. What do you mean IM the problem Robert? 🤣
I’m pretty sure I used Ponds compact powder as foundation, whose darkest shade was too light on my tanned skin. All my makeup back when I was in my early teens were either gifted to me by older cousins, Avon, or drugstore brands. My only saving grace was my youthful skin and my hatred for harsh lines. I don’t know how I made it work with limited products, but other than skinny brows, I had a decent makeup look going for me…even when it was a lime green and magenta eyeshadow look 😂.
I remember being really excited to get my first dream matte mousse and sitting in the car with my mom as we both gleefully opened it and swatched it on our hands. I was flabbergasted by the texture and was immediately obsessed with it. It wasn't until a week later, I saw some pictures of myself that my friend had uploaded to Photobucket (ahh the good ole days) and I was shocked at how the color match looked on camera. I was SURE it was just her stupid digital camera (jealousy is a disease) and NOT MY MOUSSE!!! spoiler alert- it was infact the dream matte mousse. Anyway, I agree the shade range was absolutely the problem and of course, our application technique (or lack there of lol)
I remember wearing the Dream Matte Mouse with the bright blue mascara and bright blue matching eye liner and purple eyeshadow with bright pink lip gloss. I'm a pale neutral with lots of warm freckles redhead and my mother tried to convince me to wash it off but no I refused. Needless to say by lunch my friends had an intervention. It was years before I wore any fondation and we had acne medication that had pigment and I think it they had light and dark. I can't remember the name but all it did was create an orange obviously patch on your acne. Horrifying 🤣
Robert, a great read. I did resonate with much of what you described historically - and prob one of the reasons i gave up trying to wear makeup. And I never understood why women would go around with that horrid foundation line, it makes ppl look like a painted doll! Dont be afraid to use more photographs or pictures - but I do recognise the whole copyright thing. I have to be careful too. Again I know little about cosmetics but I love learning about its history. Your substack articles are easy to read and very interesting, giving context as well as information.
I love this 🥰 the nostalgia of dream matte lol, i remember it just crusting up and being the wrong color 😂 I might have to give it another go and see how it does… also that photo above is too funny, did marcus do that?
I love this!! Boy this hit home. Yes we didn’t know what the hell we were doing as teens and early 20’s in the 80’s. lol. We need a video please showcasing you putting this on. Thank you.

I’m 100% sure you were not the only person with the wrong shade! 😂
All I can do is laugh thinking about the lines everyone had at the jaw line etc. No one blended the orange mouse into their necks at our school.and everyone was tanning an insane amount!
Oh no definitely not 90% of the girls who were wearing it at school were orange
And the fake tan always smelt a little bit like biscuits for some reason?
The biscuit smell! For a solid five years my bedsheets and pyjamas smelled of digestives 🫠
Not necessarily a bad thing I suppose if you like biscuits?

Like painting a wall!! 😂 that’s exactly it!!

I’m in my early 30s and my grandma turned me on to cold cream. I absolutely love it! I only use that and water. My skin feels amazing!

I feel like no one could ever get just the right shade! And that’s on the shade range!

I appreciate that so much!

I remember having to scrape it off with a popsicle stick though 💀
🤣
Lmaooo oh no!!

I love this new side of you! I’m a reader and while I watch ALL of your videos/channels, I’m really enjoying this!!! 💜💜💜

Also I love how we’d be like oh I’m shade ivory and then buying ivory in every other brand but every ivory was completely different 🤣

The magenta lip gloss 🤣
